Driving test centre under threat as waiting times increase

A test centre in Nottinghamshire could be closed, despite growing waiting times for learner drivers to try for their licences.

The site in Main Road, Watnall, already has a 17-week wait for car drivers to take their test, and an 11-week wait for those wanting to get a licence for lorries, large vehicles and buses.

But the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) said the site, which specialises in HGV and public service vehicle tests, is "under review" as most of these examinations are now carried out by private companies.

The news comes as instructors across the county raised concerns about learner drivers facing extra costs, booking tests when they might not be ready and watching their theory tests expire because of the lengthy waiting times. The current national average waiting time is 7.4 weeks.
