Ludhiana: Despite Punjab and Haryana High court emphasizing on implementation of the Safe Vahan Scheme, schools in and around the city are not following directions. Police attributed the accident involving a mini-bus, in which 15 students were injured, 2 of them seriously, to carelessness on the part of the driver.
Station House Officer (SHO), Khamano, Palwinder Singh said, "We found that the school bus had only one CCTV camera, which was non-functional. This is in violation of the high court order under the Safe Vahan Scheme." He said there was no supervisor in the mini-bus and the driver was not wearing a uniform either.
"To top it all, the driver was found to be drunk, which was verified in his medical examination report. We have booked him for rash driving and drunken driving, among other sections and also registered a case against him and the school under the relevant sections". Road safety experts said this is not a one off case.
"At least four accidents involving school buses occurred in Ludhiana this year and around 50 cases were reported last year. Schools are flouting the norms both in the city and the outskirts", said Kamaljeet Soi, road safety Expert associated with the Safe Transport Scheme. tnn
