From there, Li’l Bit’s life gets messier. It’s the 1960s and the young girl’s family is rife with turmoil. Generational divides rise up like icy peaks.

Director Ron Clark said he understands the gravity surrounding such serious issues as sexual assault, incest, and neglect. However, he also knows that the play—like life—is about so much more than tragedy. The emotional meat of this work lies in Li’l Bit’s very human struggle to see past the things that destroyed her, to understand what ruined family members’ lives before they went ahead and ruined hers.

“I love this play. Ms. Vogel fearlessly explores a dangerous subject with extraordinary compassion and humor to tell a unique story about one of our closely held taboos,” Clark said. “Like all great dramatists, she gives us a story that raises thorny questions and compels us, the audience, to come up with our own answers.”

Don Stewart plays troubled Uncle Peck, a deeply flawed man haunted by past and present horrors. He seeks love and connection desperately, and in the process, damages Li’l Bit forever. As the young girl develops into a teen, she’s confused by what the relationship means and her part in the madness. “The older I get, the more I lose interest in black and white characters,” Stewart said. “I’m interested in gray characters; that’s what’s intriguing to me. The challenge was, ‘How do we bring this to life?’ It’s an interesting journey for me, and there are a lot of discoveries in every rehearsal.”

The SLO Little Theatre run marks Clark’s second time directing the Pulitzer Prize-winning work. Clark said putting on the play requires a sense of courage. He thanked SLO Little Theatre Managing Artistic Director Kevin Harris for including the play in the theater’s 69th season.

“After the curtain falls, we have to admit that everyone we just met in the world of the play is deeply human,” Clark said. “All of the major characters are so deeply flawed and carry the scars of abuse that are bound to skew their view of the world. We are lucky to have this opportunity to share their burdens and pain, and then, hopefully, emerge back into our own healthier families and community.”

Director of transportation for Wilson County Schools fired

MOUNT JULIET, TN (WSMV) -

Wilson County Schools Director of Transportation Tiffany Lowery was fired on Tuesday, according to the school district.
District officials listed nearly a dozen reasons for Lowery's termination, with incompetence topping the list.

"Multiple reasons factored into the decision to terminate Ms. Lowery, but the bottom line is the decision was made in the best interest of the students and operations of Wilson County Schools," Director of Schools Donna Wright said in a statement.

Lowery had been on the job for less than a year. It was her first director of transportation position.

A letter in Lowery’s personnel file said she failed to notify parents when bus routes changed daily.

Lowery is also accused of creating a hostile work environment. She allegedly bad-mouthed bus drivers and stopped them from talking to upper-level administrators.

“We take the safety of their children first and foremost. That’s paramount,” said Amelia Hipps, a spokesperson for Wilson County Schools. “We have made the change in regards to personnel because we want children to feel safe and be safe.”

Hipps said the culture prompted several bus drivers to quit. The last straw came when several veteran bus drivers handed in their retirement papers and said they couldn’t take it anymore.

Shane Cook, operational director of transportation, is serving as interim director until a permanent replacement can be appointed.

“We want the transportation department to settle down, to run smoothly and for parents to have confidence,” Hipps said. “He or she is going to arrive safely at school and in the afternoon.”

School district officials said they are experiencing a shortage of bus drivers since other drivers have left under other circumstances. They need 15 more bus drivers. It has gotten so bad, an assistant principal is currently driving a school bus.

“The routes are covered, it just means sometimes they have to run doubles,” Hipps said. “We do need bus drivers. There is a need for bus drivers.”
