Save fuel, drive safe and clean

Truckers on the country’s national highways will now be trained in the best fuel-saving practices and efficient and safe-driving skills.

Moreover, they will have access to a general physician and e-toilets that can clean itself if users forget to flush manually.

Over the next year, close to one lakh drivers across India will benefit from the training and facilities that are courtesy an initiative by Magma Fincorp and Petroleum Conservation and Research Association (PCRA).

On Monday, a Porta Cabin (short for portable cabin) with a seating capacity for 15 driver, an LCD television, a patient observation bed and an e-toilet was inaugurated at Karimnagar, which receives high traffic density of truckers.

More in the offing

The initiative will see the launch of similar facilities in 13 different locations in the country.

“We are also coming up with a similar facility at Vijayawada. Our estimates suggest that the initiative will potentially save 7,65,000 litres of diesel when we complete training 1.02 lakh truck drivers. Clean toilets and availability of general physicians will benefit 10.20 lakh truckers in all,” said Magma Fincorp chief marketing officer Sandeep Walunj.

“There are driving schools for cars but none to learn truck driving. Most truck drivers hardly know about fuel-efficient ways of driving a truck. Our master drivers will train them with skills,” said PCRA’s Chief Regional Co-ordinator (Southern Region) A. Jankiram.

Ending driver’s ed supplement is risky

The N.C. General Assembly hopes to use $26 million a year for other purposes once the funding runs out at the end of June for driver’s education in public schools. But at what cost to drivers in terms of insurance rates? And more important, driver safety?

Those questions haven’t been addressed very well by lawmakers looking for expenses to trim. About $3 of the taxes and fees a driver typically pays on his vehicle in North Carolina in effect goes to pay for driver’s ed. The taxes and fees aren’t going to decrease; legislators will simply apply that $26 million toward other needs.

Driver’s education has never been able to replace the safety and knowledge that come with driving experience. But it has been an excellent preparation course for young drivers before they get behind the wheel.

Without the state’s supplement for driver’s ed, those teenagers will still be allowed to take the course – but at a cost of about $350. That’s prohibitive to many students and families, particularly in school systems such as Nash-Rocky Mount and Edgecombe County Public Schools, where so many students already receive free or reduced-cost lunches.

More likely, those teens will wait until they turn 18, when they can apply for driver’s licenses without taking driver’s ed first.

That might keep teens off the road a little longer, but we worry about the driving ability of someone who hasn’t received training in the classroom or behind the wheel with a qualified instructor.

If the accident rate in North Carolina increases, you can bet our insurance premiums will follow a similar path. All of those reasons make the end of driver’s education a poor decision.

Distractions Big Factor in Teen Driving Crashes

Talking to friends, changing music, and sending texts--distractions are causing teens to lose focus behind the wheel. That's causing teens to get in more serious accidents, from spinning out of control to rear-ending other cars.

Thousands of teens had cameras mounted on their cars in exchange for an insurance discount through AAA. As the cameras rolled researchers found distractions played a role in 58 percent of moderate to severe teen crashes.

The top cause of accidents: having other passengers in the car and cell phones.

For driving instructors it's one of the biggest problem's they're trying to tackle.

"Mom does it, Dad does it, all my friends are doing it, so the evidence is stacking up to me to suggest that it's really not that bad," said Jason Redoutey, President, of Mr. R's Driving School.

Redoutey says the challenge is changing that attitude.

Using a phone is so distracting AAA researchers say nearly half of teens who caused rear-end crashes were travelling at full speed, meaning they didn't brake or even steer away.

"Until you really believe that it's bad, until you really believe that it gives you a less chance of not crashing then you're going to do it," Redoutey said.

State police hope driver safety programs through schools will help change that.

"We're working with a lot of teen drivers at different school through out the county on distractions," said Tpr. Daniel Bowman, Community Service Tpr. for the State Police Jackson Post. "It's helping them to get some good behaviors and good habits early on."

It's a program State Police will continue through April. But police say if a teen needs to take a call while they're driving, the best thing to do is get to a safe place and then pull over.

"I love seeing that, it's a lot easier than seeing somebody pulled off the side of the road when you show up at a crash," Bowman added.

MSP says they do look for distracted drivers, searching for telltale signs like head down, shoulders hunched and hands off the wheel.

Lessons to be learned from the Philip Pickett case

I can still smell the alcohol on my driving instructor’s breath as he leant over to me, then 17, squeezed my knee and suggested a bit of ‘slap and tickle’ would lighten up driving lessons no end, so how about it? I scrambled out of the car, ran home and told my mum. She agreed I needed a new driving instructor. We never reported him. This was the mid-1980s, any teenager was fair game and casual sexism was so much part of life, you put up and shut up.

However trivial the incident, we were irresponsible not to report it. For it was this culture of impunity that allowed Philip Pickett to wreak life-changing harm on young students at the Guildhall School of Music. He’s not alone, but his case has been particularly shocking because his offences were long known – allegations even known to the institution 30 years ago, but never properly pursued. It follows the Michael Brewer case at Chetham’s, which led to the suicide of Frances Andrade after giving evidence, Malcolm Layfield at the Royal Northern College of Music, and (posthumously) Maurice Gendron at the Yehudi Menuhin School. There are more pending, the list of victims growing ever longer. This is not a music world problem, per se: wherever there are young people, there are individuals capable of exploiting and abusing them.

One-to-one tuition, in music as in any other walk of life, gives an adult privileged access. These revelations have provoked profound soul-searching in music colleges, specialist schools, teaching associations and music hubs. Safe-guarding policies are far more robust today, but what further measures are needed? Should ‘monitors’ be in attendance at lessons, or should there be group-only lessons (certainly cheaper)? CCTV cameras in all teaching and practice rooms, security staff, random checks?  While some of these may be useful, the fear is that they will be impractical, intrusive and introduce an atmosphere of paranoia and distrust.

It is the system of reporting, pastoral support of students and the ensuing legal procedures that need the biggest overhaul. Many of Pickett’s students were far too afraid to report him when they depended on him not only for teaching, but for their future careers in the relatively small, highly competitive early music world. A letter from the principal to Pickett asking for a response to allegations was no help at all to a vulnerable young girl facing her final diploma. Today he would have been suspended immediately.

If schools and colleges can guarantee a safe space for reporting and its aftermath, they will be preserving the future of one of the most precious relationships a young musician will ever have. An instrumental or singing teacher might be the one adult in a child’s life, outside the immediate family circle, who gives them their undivided attention. The vast majority of these teachers are a positive influence, dedicating their lives to the passing on of skills and ideas, building confidence, opening new doors, responding to a young person’s enthusiasms, strengths and weaknesses. I had the privilege of an exceptional teacher who, I later realised, taught me as much about life as music. Now I watch my children’s instrumental teachers with rising admiration: they radiate energy and enthusiasm, they are all about giving.

The headlines are, naturally, reserved for these few depraved individuals, and the professionals who protected them. Most teachers do an extraordinary job, and are too rarely acknowledged.  It would be tragic if these few were allowed to destroy or undermine the essential, and very special, role of the one-to-one music teacher.

Suspect in Las Vegas ‘road rage’ shooting due in court

The 19-year-old guy accused of killing a Las Vegas lady after a street rage occurrence is due in court Monday. Meanwhile, his lawyer is questioning the version of events given by cops and the victim’s family. Erich Milton Nowsch is charged with murder, attempted murder, assault and firing a gun from a car in the February 12 death of Tammy Meyers, 44. Police say Nowsch shot Meyers in front of her home after a confrontation while driving. According to police, the occurrence began when Meyers was giving her daughter a driving lesson at a school parking lot when “a silver four door car sped up behind them and pulled along the driver’s side of the car.” After the daughter honked the horn, the other car raced ahead and blocked their path, and a guy got out of the car threatening them. Meyers after went looking for the car with her 22-year-old son, who was armed with a 9 mm pistol, reportedly police. After finding the car, they began following it. The driver stopped, and the passenger began firing at the Meyerses, reportedly police. Meyers drove home, yet the other car followed and the occupant opened fire on them in front of their house, reportedly police. Meyers was struck in the head and died two days later. But Nowsch’s attorney, Conrad Claus, asserted he questions whether the alleged street rage occurrence between Meyers and Nowsch took place and has doubts about the family’s account of what happened. He asserted accounts of Nowsch’s reported discussions of the shootings with friends do not appear to be consistent with the street rage claim. He moreover questioned the family’s initial description of the shooting suspect. Meyers’ daughter described the driver who threatened them as being 6 feet tall. Nowsch is much shorter.
